Boyds Bears was founded by Gary Lowenthal and his wife Justina Unger.  While they were owners of an antique shop, they began making and selling antique reproductions, including duck decoys.  The first bear was a stuffed bear made for the couple's newborn son, Matthew which lead to the first "Boyd Bear", named for the of Boyds, Maryland, where they lived.  The line of plush includes bears, rabbits and other creatures of whimsy.
